Livescribe

Livescribe is the global leader in smartpens, enabling customers to capture, search and share handwritten notes on digital devices.

Livescribe is the global leader in the design and manufacturing of smartpens, enabling customers to capture, search and share handwritten notes on the digital devices they use every day. Livescribe makes the only smartpens on the market that synchronize handwritten notes with recorded audio, making the ubiquitous pen more useful in today’s world. Livescribe’s family of smartpens include the Echo smartpen, the Sky wifi smartpen and the Livescribe 3 smartpen, with complementary software for each platform.

Livescribe smartpens convert handwritten notes and audio into digital format for access through the devices we use daily, fundamentally changing the way handwritten notes are accessed and shared. Pen and paper is still the most popular method of note-taking - a more natural and focused method than a keyboard and screen.

Livescribe makes pen and paper more useful for today’s digital lifestyle. Livescribe smartpens have an embedded infrared camera that detects penstrokes on special Livescribe paper, allowing notes to be recorded digitally in real time.

Livescribe was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Oakland, California. The company has received funding from firms such as Scale, VantagePoint and Crosslink Capital, along with other participants.

About us

Livescribe™ is fundamentally changing the way that people capture, organize and share digital information using natural pen and paper.

Icaro Lavrador - Why should you never buy a Livescribe "Smart" pen. I bought one a few years ago but I really wasn't very impressed with the pen so I put it back in the box and in some shelf, after few years I decide to sell it, after all, it was a NZ$270 pen, so I did, for my surprise the display (bearly ever used) wasn't working anymore, so I google to see if I could find a fix, to my surprise I find thousands upon thousands of complaining about this display failing I even found an email from Livescribe in my inbox saying "As you near the 2 year anniversary of your smartpen (AYE-ARG-TD7-U4), it’s important to note that the Manufacturer’s OLED Display Warranty will expire on (2015-07-09). If you’ve noticed any issues with your smartpen, please notify Livescribe Customer Support" proving they knew about the problem with the display. Ok I was sad now, I didn't check the email I miss the warranty so I will pay to get it fix, after all, is a few cents display, right? WRONG! Livescribe does not produce this pen anymore, and they do not support it, great! So I got a defect pen that I cannot get fixed. I contact again the Livescribe support and they told me to contact the seller in New Zealand and guess what, that seller does not respond to my emails and/or calls and Livescribe says "We cannot do anything you need to contact the place where you bought the pen from" Great support! So let me save you some money, do you want a real smartpen? Buy a Bic it will serve you much better for much longer!

Sadie Weiss - Thank you, Stacy, and /Enric = i just heard about this pen from my new /Grammarly and was thinking of getting it - but your comments have warned me DON'T!! Bless you, for putting this on to their FB page. I feel that I should share it?

Bill Stewart - Livescribe 3 is useless on Android. If you do manage to get it to pair with the phone, your notes cannot be sent to Evernote or OneNote by the app. The Android app is far behind iOS and hasn't been updated in over a year. Buyer beware indeed.

Jose Bedregal - I am dissappinted in the 3. I have been a loyal user from day one and have purchased all versions. The pulse and echo are supperior to the 3. My 3 keeps discinnecting and peices keep breaking from inside. Unfortunatley I bought it from amazon and its past returin time. I want it to work but I wish I would of kept the oder versions.

Carsten Dreyer - Don't buy any products from this company! They knowingly sold products with a design flaw for years (OLED displays fail, no repair or replacement offered with thousands of customers affected).
Enric Calpe Castillo - Hi there, someone wants to start a class action lawsuit for "oled display issues". I have a 3 years Echo Wifi with screen dead. These gentlemen have been selling a defective product, knowingly. In my house we call it acting in bad-faith. Know that something is going to fail and keep selling it. Any lawyer would win such a case with his eyes closed. Let me know, and let them pay for their greed and little professionalism!

Carole Gan - Hardware seems OK, but the app is pretty crappy though. And yes, customer service is non existent. Transcribing handwritten text to digital is done in "snippets" which is randomly generated as a single line, parts of a sentence or paragraph, etc. and not very accurate either. Then it saves it as a PDF. Pretty useless if you want to to digitise your handwritten notes into an editable document.
Stacy Shure - I can't recommend this company or their products to anyone! We have purchased two sky wifi LiveScribe pens - not cheap! They have a known problem with their displays! They die very quickly and stop working. Which renders the pen unusable. Their customer service is: they don't repair the pens, they won't sell the parts needed to repair the pens and they know this is a problem going on over 5 years. Their customer service is non existent. NOT a good company to deal with if you have problems. Great product, NO SUPPORT OR SERVICE. Be warned!

George Matousek - I really liked my pen as long as the display worked. I understand that display failures are a common problem and I am afraid to buy a replacement pen. Is there any trade in or exchange program? I would like to get another but am scared

Adrian Cevallos - I am very disappointed... the technology behind the pen seems great, but I can't believe that the basic function of "writing" is terrible. I have to write the same word a hundred times for the ink to come out of the cartridge. My Livescribe notebook is filled with awful scribbling all over just to try over and over again to get the ink going. By the time the word is finally legible, I have missed a whole paragraph of notes. I can't believe that in such a technologically advanced pen, the basic function of writing can't be done. MAJOR improvement needs to be done to the cartridge quality SOON.

Kevin Black - The failing screen on the Echo is well documented. I bought a 2Gb Echo several years ago. Used it maybe six times. Turned it on because I actually have a use for it, still functions, but no screen. Did some research on the inter web and lo and behold, the screen craps itself just by being exposed to, well, air. What a piece of junk. I also see many people buying these one after the other and getting the same results. Look, if they are junk, don't expect the screens to magically work. What an engineering fail - maybe a class action?

Paul G Dempster - my screen died on two of these pens... exactly same way. company not interested.

Kim Bunning - I am also having issues with my brand new Echo smartpen. I bought it solely for pencasting math problems & notes ... so I could help my students virtually. But I have yet to be able to share the pencasts either via email or to a website (or even to my desktop). Customer support hasn't been great so far ... still waiting to hear back from them. If I can't get it to work in the next week or so, I will be returning it. Fortunately, it's still under warranty. Too bad ... I had an old one and loved it (I recently gifted it to a colleague :(

Ivelisse Colon Perez - I have 2 of these pens. The first one was awesome, in 3 school years, I only had to change the ink cartridges once. I bought the new one a couple of months ago , and I am on my third cartridge. Hopefully they will improve this one thing on an otherwise fantastic product.

Olivier Gaubert - Had my livescribe SKY Wifi pen for a couple of years. Used it possibly 20 times, stored it in its orginal box and now the screen is black. Response from the Customer Service: buy another one. Sorry by this is a design flaw, and actually under EU law, it should be replaced. Since I get no more response from Livescribe cs anymore, I would NOT recommend this product or company to anyone unless you are willing to spend 150/200 every couple of years or when the warranty expires.Disposable product.

Olivier Gaubert - I may too switch to moleskine. Just the fact that the company only responds two posts above about cheap to fix ink issues (!) and not the main problem exhibits what any potential buyer should be aware of. Last post from me, i gave all feedback and info that both customers and vendor should be aware of and my disappointment is definitively set in stone.

Hieu Hoang - I have a Pulse and Echo pen. Both of the OLED screens went out within 2 years. Pen still works but you need the screen to know what's going on. Spent a total of at around $300 and that's not including the notebooks and pen refills. Buyer beware.

Laura Herndon Ling - I've had an Echo for years and was hoping it would just keep getting better, but unfortunately, I can no longer recommend it. The ink refills are horrible - grey instead of black, lots of skipping, and requires a ton of pressure. My husband has the Livescribe 3, which requires a smartphone or tablet to record audio, and since he has an Apple Watch, the phone isn't always handy. Overall, these pens make life more frustrating, not easier.

Andy Colville - When working, these pens are excellent, of great quality, and can be invaluable. However, there is a known flaw with the OLED component on these devices whereby the display fails over time. Livescribe are aware of this product flaw and have increased the warranty (where OLED failures are concerned) to 2 years. However, the fault seems time dependent rather than use dependant, I.e. it doesn’t matter how much or little you use it, the display failure comes about over time (I used mine for only a few weeks then boxed it away for over a year, only to discover that the LED display no longer worked when I went to use it again. Other buyers have described similar circumstances). So, even if you have only used the pen a few times, if you bought it outwith the extended warranty period then Livescribe will not replace it. Furthermore, Livescribe do not offer a repair facility or service to rectify the flawed component. Your only hope is that the OLED fails sooner rather than later! Having no LED display on the pen makes it almost impossible to use as a recording device with any degree of confidence, so think twice before you invest between £120-£170 in this product! You can get an ordinary BIC pen for about 10p.

Ian Scarffe - I would look carefully and do your research before buying a Livescribe Pen, I bought one, used it only a few times, and when I powered it up few weeks ago the OLED Display faded so much it was useless. Support did not offer much help. In my opinion Livescribe should replace free of charge all OLED Displays for its customers. Anyone open for a class action ?

John Shore - My Echo LED gave up. I have had the product a number of years and use it regularly. I thought I could buy a refurbished one but alas, no. I would think they would at least offer to fix them. No. I ended up buying the LIvescribe 3 but that is missing many of the great feature the Echo (Ex: jump, bookmark, battery level) had plus you have to use another device to record pencasts. Not ideal but manageable. I think they made a nice product in the past. I think they really need to go back to the drawing board, talk to users and redesign their solution.

Steve Marsh - BEWARE of the Echo pen--the OLED display is prone to fade and die after 2-3 years. (search online if you don't believe this) The display on my 8GB Echo died after just about 3 years. No warranty, no support from the company apart from an offer to buy a refurb pen at a discount. (The refurbs will also have this display fading/dying issue.) I still have 3 new 1-subject notebooks, and a useless Echo with no visible display. :( Seriously Livescribe, addressing this OLED issue is LONG overdue--you have lost 100s if not 1000s of customers because of this design DEFECT that you refuse to address responsibly. I feel bad for having recommended your products to colleagues a couple of years ago.

Mary Reinhardt - I am interested in this; however, I have some concerns about support. A detailed Google review indicates that LiveScribe has gotten rid of phone support and the forums. I had aLivescribe Smartpen for three years until it died and it was a great instrument. Janet Crossland - I have been using the Livescribe since the pulse and because of my ADD it has helped me so much at work. Sue Glascoe - I was an avid Livescribe user since the pulse came out, up until a couple years ago when Livescribe quit supporting education. I was on the Livescribe Education Advisory Board as well, until they disbanded that. I still used the over 500 pencasts I created with my students up until this year, when Livescribe took down the Echo community site where they were all housed. I tried to transfer my pencasts to my computer when they warned me the community site would be taken down, but 1) most were over 5 years old and so they would NOT support transferring them to PDFs, (and their tech help were unsuccessful at helping me as well), and 2) they were long gone off my pens to make room for the new pencasts, so I could not re-download them to my computer. Hundreds of hours of work just GONE. WHY would you take down the community site when you could have just left it up for many of us educators who had so many tutorials on it for our students to use??! I will never use Livescribe again, and I will no longer recommend your product to anyone. It is terrible when a company decides it will no longer support recent products like the Echo.

James Gray - Screen died on mine too c s is bullshit

Nick Howe - i have a similar story. Several pens, over several years. I spoke to customer service today, and my Echo has another failed screen. I accept this. I'm offered a discount voucher to buy a replacement, and, I'm actually delighted to do this. But, guess what, if you're not in the US, you can f**k off. Even tho they knew I am UK based, they offer me 30% off, but it's not a usable voucher. Online customer services don't want to know, so I'm stuck with another failed pen, and the insult of a goodwill gesture that they know I can't use. I even went to the hassle of organising a US shipping address. I'm happy to pay and organise the shipping. To do half your bloody job for you. No, no use. So, customer services lie to me about being able to get a discount on a new one. Seriously, your pens aren't reliable enough to have such a crap level of customer service. I'd love another one, but you make it so very very hard to buy.

Jamahl Garrison-Lowe - 1 year into use of this premium priced device, it stops responding. So I contacted website support and after politely being told to f**k off, (and yes that is what "here is a 20% coupon to buy more of our faulty product' says to me), I did some research to see if there were other people having similar experiences with regard to your products and customer service... WOW. Livescribe's systemic commitment to ignoring their customer's while fleecing buyer's is disgusting and reprehensible. I would usually just move on and take my business to another company, but the way I have been treated by this company is filled with such arrogance; such ignoble value of and treatment to me as a customer!? Then to see that I am not the only one? Livescribe's policies and customer disregard is another level! It moved me to speak out. There have been other companies that behaved this way in the past, and they are not around anymore. Happy seven years Livescribe because with your product and customer service, I'd bet money you will make a decade. And that bet would be a safer investment than purchasing one of your pens and betting that it will still be functional over the same time period. Sincerely, Former customer sincerely pissed off

Kim Wyatt Simpao - I am with an organization of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads…(ECEDHA), we are very interested in the Smart Pen. We would like for someone to come to our Annual Conference in March and demo the pen. We will have 200 ECE department heads in attendance. I have been trying to talk to someone who handles marketing or university outreach and have not had any luck. This would be great exposure for Livescribe. Who can I speak with?

Ken Zirkman - Disappointed in quality. Has a life span of about one year before the display dies and the pen is useless. Search the internet, you'll find this is been an issue with Livescribe from the start and they have done nothing about it.

Kayla Asaryia Kindt - pretty dissapointed in your product. Every time my pen disconnects the app cannot reconnect to it I have to uninstall both of the apps and then reinstall them and start from scratch. Inside the app clicking on connect to smartpen it will not recognize my device even though the link app is paired to the device.

Benny Semmler - Nice Pen, but the quality is awful. Plastic, the lids get lost every few weeks. The functionality works really good.

Jan Stegner - Last update of LiveScribe+ app for Android january 2016: NO sharing is working anymore. I had to return to paper of my yesterday's notes. A cheap pen would be enough for that. UPDATE one day later: after updating LS Link and restarting the tablet all was working!

Christian Kleineidam - Producing new hardware might be a wrong priority when the feature set of the software still needs much attention. The iOS version seems to have simple integration with Evernote. The Android version on the other hand seems like it's a very low quality design, where I can't simply do the same.
